Ask the right Questions

DO your homework, you are interviewing the company as much as they are you, make sure that you are going to handle the job, people, place, commute. Look them up, see who you are interviewing with, Google them, try to have a conversation and turn the interview into a friendly conversation. Try to take them out of the game and into your court. Crafting the right questions for the interviewer will display confidence and knowledge about the company. While asking the wrong questions can make you appear unqualified or even desperate.

It's Who You Know, Well Almost!

So yes things have gotten tough and finding a job amongst the rest of the Millions can be tough as you can read.

So what do you do. Well use what you know, or the tools that are out. Social networking both on and offline. So the offline is easy, ask friends and family and always no matter who you are taking with let them know (in a subtle way). You never know who you are speaking with, they could be your next boss.

The online well that takes sometime but us it well. Twitter, Blogger and Facebook all have there advantages and linking all together is a blessing. I know that you want to put up that crazy picture of what you did in college, lets be real, there is a time and place, the internet is not the place. Use these tools to build your profile, the more you post about something that you are knowledgeable about the more you will be taken serious.

Get your name out on the search engines, cause the number one employeers do is a Google search and if they don't well they should. Be prepared, do one on yourself and see what pops up, this is what others see and is a first impression.

So you got an interview!

So today's companies do a lot of phone interview called screening, this is to help the interviewer determine if you are the right fit or not. This is a tough, so be prepared to think on your feet. Things they look for is are you personable, skill-set, interests, desired compensation allowing them to see if you are a fit. Sometimes a second phone interview is needed and is usually from someone within the discipline you are applying for. The worst part of phone interviews that will never come out is that you are being evaluated by someone, they should be of particle judgment but the are people and reactive at that, so be on your best behavior, also make sure your Facebook page is clean.

Then comes your interview, BE ON TIME, early set your alarm to be a 1/2 hour earlier than the real interview. You might have to fill out forms, traffic, natural disaster, you never know. Also look your best, try to dress the part. Expect to interview with three to four technical people (most likely the people you will end up working with) and maybe a group manager. Never think that that it will only be an hour if they like you be prepare to spend the day 6 hours, so keep you calendar clean. Remember that the whole point of this exercise is for the interviewers to determine if you have the skills to do the job you are interviewing for, and if you are someone they would like to work with.

New Times, New Strategy

So times are getting tough and looking for a new job or changing careers is/might coming down the hall. In times that are tough many just go back to doing what they have been, find the next gig and keep doing it, well others change it all completely, a new career, town, whole new setting. Option to the later are sometimes easier based on age, Government job great gig, but hard to come by after age 39, which sucks, plain and simple. Think of how many people you know in there mid 40 who can still hang with the best of them, think Dana Torres yea she can kick but male or female.

So what to do, keep doing the same thing or change it up, depending what you are doing sometimes changing it up make it better and in the long run more enjoyable.

Aquatics Jobs; AKA Lifeguards

It is getting hard for me to sit and read the paper anymore. All I read about is jobs that are not filling and kids that are taking their youth for granted. Studies are showing that more colleges turned down straight "A" and perfect SAT for more rounded individuals. One field that I find interesting for many reason is lifeguards, what a great way to spend your summer, plus if it rains you get paid. You can work at the Jersey Shore or a local pool. Working as a lifeguard teaches you many things most of all attention to detail, in a instant, if you are not paying attention, someone could drown.
You have 4 years in High school and 4 more in college, make the most of your time but don't forget that you are young also.

Getting Coffee

Do you feel as though this is all your internship amounted too, if so then you had one of the few bad internships. Back in the day when I was interning it was a given that you would be getting coffee, but in today's world of internships, if you are not doing real world work then the place that you did work for won't be there in a couple of years. Countless companies are looking for raw talent to help with the overload of work that comes through their doors, especially in the Creative fields. From programming to graphics to multimedia, raw talent or interns bring the creative to the next level. Interns have not be spoiled with all the office politics and crap that goes on, the love to design and enjoy it. Use them and you to will find your whole staff working at the next level.
